Post - Production

Post production is like the binding of a book—it binds the pages together, it pulls all the loose threads and cuts them, and it binds your story into a package worthy of picking up.Without post production, you just have a stack of pages, waiting to be forgotten. Post Production is the invisible art of film.If post production is done right, the effect should be so subtle, so seamless, that it doesn’t interfere with the story.

The New Standard Post Production team is available to use in whatever capacity our clients need. If you decide you want to have someone else sweeten your audio, or colorize your film, then you are free to do so. Or, we can do it all for you. We are happy to work with you in either capacity you choose.

Let’s take a quick look at some of the broader steps of post production.

  • Shot Selection/Sequencing: This is the very first step that every film takes once it has been filmed. The cream of the crop is selected shot-wise, and then all shots are catalogued and sequenced. Since most productions are filmed in a non-linear fashion, this step is the first time that the scenes actually seem to make sense next to each other.
  • Rough Cut/Fine Cut: Out of this sequenced footage, a rough cut is created. This is just like it sounds, a rough, basic layout of the footage. This allows the director to change some basic shot orders if necessary, and allows the director to make sure he is happy with the scenes that have been shot. Next, a fine cut is created, and all scenes are edited down to flow smoothly together. Again, the director works with the editors to refine the product.
  • Visual Effects: Visual effects (VFX) are now added to the fine cut. The fine cut is taken into an editing program and adjusted for simple things, such as coloration, and may also add in color filters, complete any type of green screen work, and add in any animated or composited elements.
  • Trimming: Finally, the fine cut (with VFX) is trimmed down once again, and then sent to sound editors.
  • Sound Design/Sweetening: This stage is the first time any sound is adjusted. This is also the first time any kind of external sound FX is added. Vocal recordings are synced, and then the final sound mix is created. This will include external noise removal, addition of sound effects, foley work (the human element; cups sliding, footsteps, nails on a table), and the music selections are made. ADR/Voiceover work is also added at this point, if necessary.
  • Finalization: The director meets with the editors (and producers, if involved) to finalize the film. Final tweaks are made, and then the finished film is distributed/delivered.
  • Distribution/Delivery: Formatting the media content for distribution. This may be on DVD, Blu Ray, Film Strip,  or various Broadcast formats for Television.
